JOURNEY OF A TRAINING TEACHER
As a part of the B.Ed, curriculum, I completed a 4-month internship at S.N.H.S.S Okkal from June 19 to October 5. I got an opportunity to learn my strengths and weaknesses as a teacher. I had an enriching experience under the guidance of my mentors, Dhanya Miss and Sreejith Sir, and the leadership of H.M. Sini Miss. My primary responsibility was teaching physics and chemistry to students in 8th grade, where I created engaging lesson plans that aligned with the curriculum. I utilized interactive teaching strategies such as problem-solving sessions, group activities, experiment demonstrations and real-life applications to make learning enjoyable and effective. In addition to physical science, I also conducted classes on health education and value education, contributing to the holistic development of the students and expanding my role as an educator.
During my internship days, I was able to develop skills of observation, critical thinking ability and skill of demonstration. I developed skills in handling apparatus and using ICT. I felt happy to see the response of students in most of the classes while teaching. I got the opportunity to conduct achievement and diagnostic tests for the students. Remedial teaching given to the slow learners showed improvement in them. I also conducted a case study and selected one student from 8 C and helped her to overcome her problems. Through action research, I was able to identify the issue of problem-solving in physics and help them to overcome it through proper reinforcement.
In addition to regular classes, I conducted club activities aimed at enhancing students' interest in mathematics. I organized a quiz competition, where students could demonstrate their knowledge of various scientific concepts including moon day, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and learning. I also poster-making competitions, which encouraged students to develop critical thinking skills. Another activity I conducted was an experiment demonstration and apparatus exhibition which helped students to develop scientific attitude.
In health education, I focused on key topics such as personal hygiene, nutrition, mental well-being, and physical fitness. I emphasized the importance of these concepts through discussions, visual aids, and real-life examples, encouraging students to adopt healthy habits. I took Yoga and aerobics classes for students. I was tensed to take these classes but felt satisfied after the class. During my internship, I was also assigned to serve mid-day meals for the students and also got involved in many other daily activities which gave me immense pleasure to become one among them.
My value education lessons were aimed at instilling moral values like patience and punctuality. Through activities such as storytelling, role-playing, and reflective exercises, I encouraged students to apply these values in their daily lives, fostering a positive attitude and ethical mindset.
In art education, I got an opportunity to take classes on different art forms and the cultural heritage of India. This helps students to develop multilingual and multi-cultural attitudes. I also got an opportunity to conduct an art fest and sports which helped me to develop skills for a good leader. Also conducted midterm and first terminal exams and corrected their answer sheets.
A significant aspect of this internship was the regular feedback I received from my mentor and the H.M. They always reinforce me whenever I do good things. Their constructive insights were invaluable in helping me identify areas for improvement, refine my teaching techniques, and enhance my classroom management skills. They provided guidance on addressing the diverse learning needs of students and adapting my methods to suit individual differences. Their continuous support boosted my confidence and competence as a teacher.
To monitor student progress, I conducted regular assessments such as quizzes, assignments, and tests. By offering detailed feedback and individualized support, I was able to help students overcome challenges and improve academically. Building a positive rapport with my students further encouraged their active participation and engagement in the classroom.
This internship marked a turning point in my development as an educator. It not only strengthened my teaching and interpersonal skills but also deepened my understanding of how to create a supportive, inclusive learning environment. The mentorship of Dhanya Miss and Sreejith Sir, and the leadership of Sini Miss played a crucial role in shaping my growth, preparing me to confidently take on the multifaceted responsibilities of a teacher.
In conclusion, this internship has been an invaluable learning experience that has enhanced my teaching abilities and deepened my passion for education. The guidance and support I received throughout this journey have equipped me with the necessary tools to succeed as a teacher, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the student's academic and personal growth.
